The Cinnamon Roll Lady
By Bro. Bill Scroggs August 29, 2010
If I am not mistaken it was Doug who first dubbed Mrs. Cookie Barnes, Phyllis Adam’s mom, as the Cinnamon Roll Lady. He has a way of coming up with a nick name for many folks he cares for, sometimes even using descriptions that could be considered flattering.
Now Cookie had many talents, but cooking was for sure one of her strong suits. I saw and was the recipient of some of her abilities in this area, but by listening to her family after she passed away this month, I learned how extensive her prowess in this field was.
Cookie over the years has shared her skills with probably thousands or tens of thousands of people she would call friends. She cooked meals for boys from the airbase near where they lived in California; probably giving them a taste of home cooking just before going around the world. I can almost hear some of them flying missions and dreaming of going back and getting a piece of her special lemon pie.
To be called the Cinnamon Roll Lady was not a bad thing. Cookie was known for giving beyond herself. She would get up early to bake the rolls to bring them to our breakfast on the mountain and acted indignant if they didn’t all disappear. She always liked cooking for “them old folks”, who she said would eat anything.
Cookie demonstrated by her life the importance of the verse found in Ecclesiastes 9:10, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all the might.” Cookie truly blessed God as she did it unto us the least of His children. To Phyllis and her sister Bill; we say thanks for sharing her with us.
What is a Missionary?
By Bro. Bill Scroggs August 22, 2010
Having been raised in a Christian home, I found myself going to WMU circle with our mom probably before I went to school. I was a Son Beam when Doug and I were still preschoolers.
I can remember hearing stories about missionaries and having images of larger than life folks who travel to exotic places to share Jesus with the natives. I thought the call to missions had to be the weirdest thing a person could face.
As I grew older and at least somewhat wiser I met several missionaries from around the world and found out some of my preconceived notions were correct. These folks are weird!
In reality, I found out our missionaries are people just like you and I who have listened and given themselves to the service to God. They have children who are, many times, no different from us.
When I began to study The Bible I came to understand that each of us in reality (as children of God) are missionaries, whether on another continent or island. We truly are ministers to strangers, whether they speak our language or not.
We have been placed here for a purpose and have the same responsibilities of carrying the “Good News” of God’s love wherever we are planted. I am grateful for our foreign missionaries as well as the missionaries we see daily. Remember the words of Paul in 2 Corinthians 5:20, “We are ambassadors for Christ.” …And that is wherever you happen to be.

Hi, Neighbor
By Bro. Bill Scroggs August 15, 2010
After the past week and our lesson on the good Samaritan I thought about the question that started it all: In Luke 10:29 the young lawyer, wanting to justify himself, asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
In the past, most people knew each family on their block by name as well as the names and grades of the children. Of course, that was in the days before ‘Leave it to Beaver,’ and ‘Andy Griffin.’ Now we are fortunate to live in a place where you even know one of your neighbors.
Here on the mountain we are blessed with neighbors from all around these United States and even some on other continents. The secret starts with a relationship with Jesus Christ that unites us into the family of God.
Then, rather than taking what we have for granted, we see neighbor after neighbor reaching beyond themselves to help and encourage each other as well as welcoming friends.
The story reminds us to remember compassion and friendship are not limited to next door, next block, or next mile regardless of race, color, background or any other external criteria.
Jesus told us in Matthew 25:40, “In as much as you have done it unto the least of these my brothers you have done it unto me.” Be sure to say “Hi” to your neighbor no matter where they are, or where you are. Go ahead, make someone’s day!

You Are Remarkable
By Bro. Bill Scroggs August 8, 2010
This week, I heard someone talking about remarkable people. At first I was semi-impressed as I saw the folks he was talking about. Then I started thinking, ‘Wait a minute, each person in our own right is remarkable. The writer of Psalm 139:14 says it this way, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
Each person you meet has special gifting and abilities. Some are able to learn how to do things, while others appear to have a natural bent for accomplishing the same task.
Whatever abilities you have, you are remarkable in the implementation. There are some tasks in your life that only you will be able to accomplish. There is someone in your life that only you will be able to touch in a positive way.
You may have been placed here because only you can put a smile on one individual’s face. Or only you can give a smile to that person. Have you ever thought about the fact that you may be the only one that gives that person a smile? What if you were not there to give someone a smile or a kind word?
Each of us is on a journey that begins at birth and continues until our mission is complete and God calls us home. You are truly remarkable; don’t sell yourself short in accomplishing the mission you have been given by God.

The Walk of Faith
By Bro. Bill Scroggs August 1, 2010
To walk by faith requires a trust that is not defined by what you know or see. We begin this journey in life not by choices we made, but by the grace of God. The birth of a child is a miracle that no child chooses, but is chosen for them.
Our first several years on this earth are spent learning how to do things by being told, or by watching others as they show us what to do. In the growth process of trial and error, we find there are some things we can do and some we must struggle to accomplish if they can be done at all.
To walk by faith with God is to put aside the mental learning and grab onto what cannot be seen in a relationship of trust. To trust God we must put aside the ‘I can’t’s’ and ‘I wants’ and even the ‘I don’t wants’ and by faith extend the prayers of “Thy will be done.”
In the process of the walk by faith, we do not always see the pathway laid out for us clearly. Sometimes the next step has to be one that comes from trusting where we have come from, and where God has led us, until we see where He is taking us.
Think back today to where He has brought you and ask yourself, “Can I trust Him wherever He will take me?” The answer lies in the Apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 1:6, “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

A Tribute to Bro. Bob Adkins
By Bro. Bill Scroggs July 25, 2010
Where do you begin to describe the loss that will be felt not only in the Adkins family, but also at First Baptist Church Petit Jean. The contributions Bro. Bob made are more than monetary: He pitched in with blood, sweat, and tears from the clearing of the lot to build the church until he was no longer able to stay on the mountain.
Bro. Bob shoveled dirt to clear the lot and help lay the foundation, hammered nails, and drove the loader to get the materials up to the highest levels. He shared many fond stories about the crews that helped build the church that were from Texas, as well as the work he, Bro. Roy Brannon, and his 11 year old grandson Tyler did from clearing trees to hauling gravel and many other tasks during the building phases.
As the church was completed there was evidence of the work Bro. Bob did with Bro. V.L. Harris, the first pastor, and others as the structure of the church began to take shape. They worked to insure First Baptist Church was a Southern Baptist Church and that it would be known as a mission minded church; not content to just let ‘the buck stop here.’
For as long as he was able, Bro. Bob was active in associational and state activities and, except for the past year or two, had helped in all the Church in a Day projects in the association. Bro. Bob handmade crosses to give our visitors for the past several years that will be worn for years to come in places all over the world.
Bro. Bob left quite a Legacy and very large shoes to fill, even if they were only size 7’s. Pray for Tommie and the rest of the family as we all mourn the loss.

Hotter Than…
By Bro. Bill Scroggs July 18, 2010
This time of year brings hotter temperatures and the conversations bring some comments that it is “Hotter than Hades.” Every time I hear that comment it causes me to cringe as I know these people do not even begin to know what they are talking about.
Yes, our weather has been hot and it always does get hot about this time of year. There are many people who are sweating and miserable because of the heat we are facing.
The heat on earth and the misery that goes with it is of no comparison to the place of punishment God has created for the devil and his followers. Many folks snicker, laugh and joke when discussing hell and consequently we have become de-synthesized to what it is and its purpose.
Hell is a real place of torment for purpose of eternal punishment for the devil and the ones who follow him and never repent and turn to Jesus Christ for salvation. Be careful lest we downplay the reality and in doing so lead some to think it is a temporary place with no long term consequences.
Remember that Jesus did not come to condemn you and I, but that through Him we might be saved (John 3:17.) Give the world the good news so they not have to go to that place of eternal punishment as the rich man in Luke 16:24-31 wanted a warning for his brethren.
Yes, it is warm, but not that hot.

Summer Time and The Camping is Easy
By Bro. Bill Scroggs July 11, 2010
Cheyenne Evans, Ezra Evans, Courtney and Reta Scroggs got to go to Camp this week at Camp Paron. Things have changed much since the ‘good old days’ with sweat running down your back during worship service and 90 degree heat (not really) in the cabins at night to try to go to sleep.
One thing that has not changed is there are no TV’s at camp and that is still a culture shock to many of the youngsters who show up for the first time. When I saw Reta and the girls at talent night on Thursday, Ezra mentioned she was ready to get back home to watch TV because there wasn’t a
Of course I had to tease her that the boys had TV in their cabins (there weren’t.) But even that was just a minor setback and soon forgotten as more pressing fun was remembered.
Cheyenne, even though she was at least a little scared, got up and sang at the talent show. It is always a blessing seeing many young children sharing their talents and a special blessing when one is one of ours.
Camp is over for most of our bunch except for Courtney who went as a councilor to help Reta. She will be going back for Youth Camp and a chance to ‘enjoy’ being a camper. She was a big help to Reta and did the cabin devotional a couple of nights, doing an excellent job.
Thank you, First Baptist Church Petit Jean, for sending our kids to camp. Time will tell what the eternal investments will bring. Let us claim the promise of Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Are you ready to go next year?

Let Freedom Ring
By Bro. Bill Scroggs July 4, 2010
With temperatures in the high nineties, many are complaining about the heat and uncomfortable situations. While we are sitting in relative safety sipping on our iced tea, we have many friends and neighbors serving in the military around the world.
These soldiers, many sitting in the shade of a Hummer in temperatures in excess of 120 degrees, are serving so we can still have the right to freely express our thoughts and to help others around the world where the idea of freedom as we know it is only a dream.
Remember as we enjoy time with family and friends this weekend to pray for those serving our country around the world and also their families who are alone waiting for them to come home, or at least hear from their loved one even for just a few minutes.
Hebrews 3:13 reminds us: “But exhort one another daily, while it is called today.” May we never forget the men and women who are paying the price so we may enjoy our privileges. When you see a soldier, remember to say thanks and let them know you are grateful for their sacrifices they and their families are making for us.
God Bless you and God Bless America.

The Forecast
By Bro. Bill Scroggs June 27, 2010
Many have said “Everyone is talking about the weather, but no one can do anything about it.” When they say that, they are forgetting about ‘The One’ who can and does control the weather.
I heard a sportscaster making fun of the weather man this week. Apparently the sports personality had waited patiently for the weather report to be over so he could get to something more important.
He kidded the weatherman about taking 7 minutes to say the same thing he said for the last week. The forecast was, ‘hot with a slight chance of rain, less than 10%.’ The funny part was, the sports personality wasted about 2 minutes talking about the weatherman not having anything to say and then proceeded to talk about hockey.
Every day we have only so many minutes and how we use them does make a difference. Have you given someone an encouraging word? Have you shared a smile or laugh with someone that needed something positive to smile about?
We can’t change the weather, but we can make someone’s day, and possibly even change someone’s eternal destination, which will change their eternal ‘forecast.’
Give someone today some ‘Son-shine’ as seen in Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Fathers Day
By Bro. Bill Scroggs June 20, 2010
Happy Fathers Day to all you dads! Today has a great distinction: On Mother’s Day more calls are made to moms that to dads on Father’s Day, but more collect calls are made to dads than any other day of the year.
Over the years I have watched as dads handle different situations. Many have been impatient and even cruel and hateful to their children. It is always sad to see children mistreated and ridiculed in public places. The sad thing is I have found myself not being as patient and as kind as I should have been.
It is always a blessing to see some dads, though, that are kind and patient and even going the extra, extra mile; answering question after question, waiting as each crack, crevice and bug is thoroughly examined.
I have been blessed to know some dads in my life that didn’t have any children. These men had a kindness for children, and to watch them you would have thought they had raised a houseful of children and a passel of grandchildren too.
I think the reason these folks are so good is they have been taught by the Heavenly Father, who should be the example for each of us. Remember the words of the Psalmist in Psalm 137:3-5, “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them.”
Blessed is the man who has children and raises even more spiritual children.

Vacation Time
By Bro. Bill Scroggs June 13, 2010
As you read this I will be missing you. We are in Florida taking a vacation we started planning about three or four years ago. First one couldn’t go then another. Finally we made the decision to go ahead this year and go with the ones who could go.
Naturally we will not all be there and if we put it off another year there again would be reasons one or the other could not make it. But we chose to go with the ones available because with our ever expanding family next year or the next will not be any better and too soon this set of grandchildren will be off on vacations of their own.
I have found one reason or the other over the years not to go to some exciting places. Doesn’t the same thing happen in other phases of our life? We can miss opportunities in employment, education, relationships, missions or many other areas, as time waits on no man.
Be sure to remember us in prayer as we travel. Be sure to pray for others of our congregation as they travel over the next few weeks. Pray for our visitors who are traveling and for Bro. Dusty as he shares with you today.
As you vacation remember it is not a vacation from God, but He is with you where ever you go. There will be people you will meet and see that may need your witness. Consider the words of the apostle Paul in Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Even on vacation, fulfill your purpose!

Is it Half Time?
By Bro. Bill Scroggs June 6, 2010
We are approaching the mid-way point of 2010. If you blink twice 2011 will be here. Can you believe it? I have already heard someone talking about buying for Christmas. Talk about a good place for your overachievers anonymous.
I had always heard the years fly by as you get older, but hearing has nothing on experience. Some of us watch things happen. Some folks make things happen and still others look back and say, “What happened?”
With the children out for summer, they think it will be a long time until school starts, but our teachers are already thinking how quickly August will be here and the cycle will start all over.
Today you have 24 hours or 1440 minutes or 86,400 seconds. When you think about it that way it seems like a lot, but it isn’t how long it is, but rather what we do with what we have.
Take what you have today and be a good steward with the time God has given to us.
God looks at us and doesn’t see what we didn’t do or can’t do, but sees what we have done and can do, and all He asks for is our availability. He wants us to look ahead and not to what lies behind. Let us join Paul as he said in Philippians 3:14”, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

Memorial Day Weekend
By Bro. Bill Scroggs May 30, 2010
Memorial Day weekend is always filled with so many different activities. It has different meanings to each individual and family, and as such is celebrated in a variety of ways. Some people honor the men and women of our armed forces and others celebrate a three day weekend with barbeques. Some travel to family reunions and others visit the graves of loved ones and do good deeds.
However you enjoy this weekend do not forget to thank the men and women you encounter who serve or served in our armed forces. Remember the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice and their families, giving their lives that we might live in safety.
Give thanks to those who are now serving, as well as their families who make significant sacrifices also. Those who wait behind many times are trapped in their own mental and emotional battles and deserve and need our prayers also.
Another group of soldiers we must thank and pray for are those who were wounded and carry physical and or emotional scars. Many of these daily deal with challenges from these wounds and for them the battle has not ended.
Thank God for men and women who have served, are serving or are getting ready to serve.
The writer of 1 Thessalonians 5:17 gives us some good advice with these words, “Pray without ceasing.” This is especially true concerning our soldiers and their families.

Compassion
By Bro. Bill Scroggs May 23, 2010
The word “compassion” should stir up mind pictures of times you have helped someone, or been helped by someone, or witnessed someone else meeting someone’s need.
Ever since I have been a member of First Baptist Church Petit Jean I have constantly seen acts of compassion by you folks as you reach out in missions around the world and locally.
I see neighbor helping neighbor and even meeting needs of strangers that are not yet friends. This legacy resonates across our state and nation as we touch the lives of our many visitors.
The compassion is not limited to humans either. We see Phil and Linda as well as many others spoiling the wildlife of the area by providing convenient food for them. We all have seen the flock of geese grow and thrive because of the many bags of corn scattered by Phil.
My stray cats survive partly because the Chapmans keep them fed and watered while we are not here through the week. The Adkins as well as others have fed the humming birds many gallons of nectar that keeps them returning to the mountain.
The word “compassion” means to come alongside or be with someone in passion. It is a word that denotes you can’t be just neutral, but must identify with the person (or animal) to meet a certain need.
That is what God did for us. He saw our need and moved with compassion to send us a savior. As Romans 5:8 says, “God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Thank you, folks; keep it up!

Will the Real Man (or Woman)
Please Stand Up
By Bro. Bill Scroggs May 16, 2010
Tis the season to hear political advertisements over and over and over… This week you will get the opportunity to exercise your right to vote and help elect the candidate of your choice.
I often hear people say, “Well there really isn’t much difference.” Or, they might say, “I am just voting the lesser of the evils.” Some people even say, “There isn’t much need for me to go.”
1800 – ONE VOTE in the Electoral College made Thomas Jefferson President over Aaron Burr.
1845 – ONE VOTE brought Texas into the Union.
1847 – ONE VOTE elected Whig candidate George G. Dunn over Democratic candidate David M. Dobson for the U.S. House of Representatives in Indiana.
1867 – ONE VOTE decided on the purchase of Alaskan territory.
1916 – ONE VOTE in each California precinct re-elected Woodrow Wilson to the Presidency over Charles E. Hughes.
1960 – ONE VOTE per precinct made John F. Kennedy the President over contender Richard Nixon.
How different history could have been changed by one vote. It is your opportunity to, “Let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation (James 5:12).” Stand up and be counted.

Happy Mother’s Day
By Bro. Bill Scroggs May 9, 2010
It is always interesting to see letters from young children expressing their feelings for their mothers. This week I saw one from a three year old that said her mom likes kitty cats; she is a dog lover. She said her favorite color is blue; green is mom’s color of choice. She said her mom is “3” years old; her mom was “3” about three decades ago. The little girl said her mom has brown hair and blue eyes. Her mom’s hair is actually a shade of red.
The youngster said her mom’s favorite thing to do was work in the kitchen; mom said, ‘not really, but too cute.’ The little girl nailed it on the last question as she said, “My mom is the greatest mom in the world because she gives me hugs.” The mom’s reaction was just as you would expect, “AWWW, I love this little girl!”
There is nothing like the eyes of a child to put important things into perspective. There are many tasks moms (or dads for that matter) may not be so good at, but the hugs hide a multitude of flaws.
Every birth is a miracle, but even greater is the miracle of God as He gives you and me just the mother we need. It is a blessing as He matches us with just what we need. Let us join the Psalmist, in Psalm 139:14, when he said, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”
Happy Mother’s Day! Thank God for your Mother.

What Would Happen If?
By Bro. Bill Scroggs May 2, 2010
What would happen if you didn’t …. Has your mind ever gone wild on the "what ifs" in this world? What if it rains? What if it doesn’t? What if it storms? What if it floods? And on and on and on….
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you didn’t get to mow your yard? Because of all the rain we received last year, I know some of us discovered that answer, at least for a while. In fact, several times this past year, I had to bag my grass because that way I could cut it while it was still partially wet.
This year with the Sammy and Nell Jones back in Texas, dealing with health issues and Doug laid up with his knee problems, the Jones' yard has gone "au naturel." And…that site truly has a new look.
Last week, some kind of wild flower (a weed to some) had bloomed in its entire splendor, carpeting the front lawn with a beautiful hue I had not seen since I have been coming to the mountain. Obviously, the lawn had been seeded and cared for by our heavenly Father; giving us a sight we would not have seen if man had touched it.
As I looked on the field, I was reminded of Jesus’ words in Luke 12:27: “Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”
Think today how well God cares for us, even when we are not aware of His Hand.
What would happen if we didn’t try to help Him so much?

What Had to Happen?
By Bro. Bill Scroggs April 25, 2010
To celebrate Rhonda’s birthday this week, many things had to happen. First, Reta and I had to meet, and I had to wear her down to get her to like me. Then I had to connive her into marrying me. After that, I joined the army. Reta had to get off from work, drive four hours to Fort Leonard Wood where I was stationed, and I had to get a weekend pass.
All that had to come together for Reta to be able to conceive Rhonda at that exact time. When Rhonda was born, her lung tore as she started to breath. Doctors were able to see what was going on and help her until she was able to breathe on her own. Needless to say, many prayers also were sent up at that time for God’s healing and protection.
While Rhonda was growing up, her allergies were so bad she had to take shots weekly and, for a while, sometimes twice a week. Again. More prayers for healing as well as thanksgiving for doctors and other caregivers who were able to give her the relief she needed. Truly, much had to happen for us to have her with us now, as well as to have Courtney and, of course, Clark.
All this is interesting, but nothing can compare to what God has provided in allowing us to become part of His family. Sin separated us from Him, and our best efforts, even with His directions, were never enough to bring us into the right relationship with Him.
But . . . He in His wisdom and love provided the way for us to enter His kingdom forever (John 3:16) through His Son’s blood that was shed on the cross. Yes, as unworthy as I am, God allowed His Son to go through all that just for me!

That is Not Appropriate
By Bro. Bill Scroggs April 18, 2010
The buzz phrase for the year is, “That is not appropriate.” It can be applied to almost anything. I first heard the phrase by Reta in conjunction with levels of discipline for 4 year olds in her class room. She was explaining why you could not just make a child sit down for long periods of time. We have all manner of situations today because courts have ruled against Bible based discipline (Proverbs 23:13-14 and others) which should be administered lovingly by the parents.
When children grow up without proper correction, we see teens, young adults and then even senior adults demonstrating inappropriate behavior. It is interesting to see that solutions God gave us in His word have been deemed “inappropriate.” Reading the Bible in class is said to be against the law. To pray in school is said to be against the law. In truth it is not against the law to read the Bible or sing “Christian” songs at school. In reality in the right context it is totally acceptable. To pray in school also is totally acceptable as long as it is student led and has so far been upheld in every Supreme Court challenge.
What is not appropriate is to ignore God and His word. When we ignore God’s word, The Bible, The owner’s manual if you will, there is no doubt that you will run into trouble. Some folks think it is inappropriate to praise God and obey Him in all things. If that is so I will have to follow the words of the writer of Hebrews 12:28-29, “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire.” Give Him praise! That is appropriate.

The Week After
By Bro. Bill Scroggs April 11, 2010
Have you ever given much thought about the week after the resurrection? Many questions were answered, but probably even more questions came up. The disciples most likely got to compare notes about what happened, and how that made sense of the words Jesus had spoken to them as they walked by the Sea of Galilee.
The conversations around the table had become a reality. He had informed them that one of them would betray Him and one of them would deny Him three times before the rooster crowed three times.
Jesus had told them He was going to die, and all of this must have seemed as a parable or one of His other stories that they had not totally been able to grasp. Now the week after, they were able to see more clearly.
The cob webs of grief had cleared from their minds and the teachings had firmed up the backbone Jesus had worked on for three years. The disciples grew bold enough to stand tall for the task God had called them to.
When the smoke cleared, the raw recruits Jesus had picked up along the way became the men God needed to serve in His army to bring others to the kingdom of Heaven.
From a bunch of wimps to soldiers in The Kings army; what a difference a week made. Even doubting Thomas gave a proper confession of his faith in John 20:28, “Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.” What about you? Have you made the same confession? It will make a difference for the rest of your eternity.

The Resurrection
By Bro. Bill Scroggs
April 4, 2010
Today we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. On Friday nearly 2000 years ago, Jesus had been placed in a borrowed tomb. His disciples, the ones closest to Him, were confused and probably shaken to the core by the loss.
Their thoughts took them back over the past three years and the journey they had taken with Him. The lessons they had learned as they walked by His side probably replayed through their minds and conversations throughout the weekend.
Even the fact that He had warned them of His death was no doubt little consolation to them as Jesus’ body lay in the grave. Every emotion each of us feels during a time of grief was going through their minds.
You can imagine how the stress of the grief process literally drained the strength and desire to get out and go on from the disciples. When they were still in the deepest throes of despair because of the loss of their best friend, strange news came from the graveyard.
The ladies who had made the trek to the tomb to put the burial spices on the body of Jesus had an exciting revelation to share with them. The tomb was empty, He was not there, He was alive.
That news changed everything, not just got the women, and the disciples, but for all of mankind. He is alive, He is risen!

Getting Ready
By Bro. Bill Scroggs March 28, 2010
Have you noticed how long it takes to get ready? It seems like we used to stay ready for anything and, if we weren’t, it didn’t take long to get that way and head out.
I mean, I kept my fishing equipment in the truck in case I passed a promising pond or creek. Reta usually carried a book just in case there was a place to fish so she could enjoy the trip also.
Getting ready for Easter only took a few days, though I am sure Reta and the girls put a little more thought and effort into the process. Sometimes it was probably best that I didn’t get into the planning stages of helping the girls get ready.
I remember some of the Easter programs and things Reta did at church and how much time she put into the practices and building of the sets. I even remember times when I grew impatient as she put extra touches on things to make the programs come out looking as professional as 3rd to 6th graders could.
Hopefully I have grown at least a little more patient; at least that would help explain why it takes me longer to get around.
Did you notice how long God took to get ready? From the time Adam sinned, until God allowed His son Jesus to go to the cross was considered a long time. It was a long time, but God took care of every detail necessary to provide for our salvation. 2 Peter 3:9 tells us why God took his time, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” God does all things well (Mark 7:37.)

Say What?
By Bro. Bill Scroggs March 21, 2010
Listening to the news the other night, it was mentioned that there was the possibility for snow today in northern Arkansas that was a little bit strange, but the next segment talked about some hikers already dealing with ticks.
We are barely getting close to short wearing weather and some folks have found some of the Arkansas treasures becoming quite attached to them. Now things are stranger than ever before, but snow and ticks usually are not even close to each other in conversations.
We have just entered spring, and I guess insects are a natural part of the overall cycle of life, but some are more useless than others, and to me that is the category where the tick fits. In fact, anything that can become or is a parasite on me needs to belong on the extinct species list or at least very high on the endangered species list.
Now I would not mind a good quick snow that is short lived, in fact Daffodils blooming above a blanket of snow really does make a pretty picture, especially if the snow only lasts a few hours.
The red marks on the ultra pasty white ankles and legs though, are not a welcome sight. But every day brings a few irritants that each of us must endure. If it were not for the cold days, we would not appreciate the warm days. If it were not for a few bug bites, we would not notice the days and months of relative peace from the pesky rascals.
May we enjoy the blessings God brings our way and find a way to rejoice even in the trials. “This is the day that the Lord hath made? I will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)

The Signs
By Bro. Bill Scroggs March 14, 2010
When the time changes, we know (theoretically) spring is here. The powers to be have continued to move the dates up to the point we now might even get snow after the time has changed. (It has snowed late in March.)
The time change, the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering, Daffodils blooming, and a myriad of other signs lead us to think Spring could be here. Actually, for many years The Annie Armstrong Easter Offering has been a sign of Spring to me.
We get to participate in this offering that reaches to all fifty states and the rest of North America. The reason this reminds me of spring, is that the signs of spring bring hope to mind. The longer days are hope for warmer weather. The buds and flowers are a sign of hope for fruit.
The Annie Armstrong Easter Offering brings hope for the millions who live on our continent for eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. When we give to this offering, we are bringing hope not only for the here and now but to generations in the future for a better day because we have helped change the hearts of those around us.
To meet our Annie Armstrong Goal takes each of us catching the vision and going beyond thinking about it and giving as Mary did when she broke open the alabaster box and the fragrance filled the room.
Think about the hope we have to share with neighbors we have never met. Remember what Jesus says in Matthew 25:40, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

The Scars
By Bro. Bill Scroggs March 7, 2010
This week, I saw a commercial for the...no, for THE Oscars. As you know, months previous to the big show, hype and hoopla builds non-stop: who will be there, what will they be wearing, who will be on their arms, and on and on and on. The logo for this year (or maybe always) has the word "The" inside the "O." At first glance, I thought the print said “The Scars.”
I knew what the announcement was talking about because of the picture of the Oscar statue, but it caused me to think: Many who are competing for the prize of the Oscar have such focus that when they do not win, they feel as if they have failed. Such an emotion causes a scar.
We also see some of the participants who have stepped on others in their quest for the top spots, and again victims are scarred and strewn in the pathway. Maybe it is fitting that the carpet they walk is red in that many have given (or taken) blood, sweat, and tears to reach their destiny.
While millions anxiously wait for the big show, I find it troubling that many have wasted so much brain space, ink, paper, and film to build up to the moment that will be a realization of a dream for a few and the depth of disappointment for thousands of others.
Our true value, however, is found in The Scars...the scars of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Those scars are proof that even though the world may not think as much of us as do our friends and family, we are loved and wanted by our Heavenly Father.
Sin had left a crimson stain, but the scars of Jesus wash us white as snow. “He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

Are You Ready For Spring?
By Bro. Bill Scroggs February 28, 2010
This has been an interesting month. We have enjoyed snow and ice and rain and cold and sunshine and even nice temperatures.
The temperature finally got above freezing for enough days to melt off the last of the snow, and with it hopes for the kids to be able to get out for another snow day.
The robins are coming around and spring flowers are pushing through the ground, getting ready for spring. There are many signs that spring is just around the corner.
The majority of us is ready for warmer days and have enjoyed our share of snow and winter weather for the year. Even those of us with Eskimo tendencies are pretty much satisfied for the year and willing to come out of hibernation.
Tomorrow we start a new month and see two months already past from the New Year. It seems as if Christmas was just yesterday, and if you look around, the stores probably have the Yule logs right behind the Easter decorations.
Spring does bring cheer and hope to most of us as we enjoy the increasing sunshine. Even if it is cool today, let us begin to share the cheer of spring with others.
This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:24)

Show Me the Money
By Bro. Bill Scroggs February 21, 2010
The title of today’s thought is also a quote we hear every so often. Spend a few seconds (at least 10) thinking about that statement before you go on to the rest of the page. The reason I wanted you to think about it is that I wanted you to think about "who" you think would have said, “Show me the money!” and why that person would have said it.
Would you believe me if I told you Jesus said, “Show me the money”? If you look in Matthew 22:19, you will find Jesus said, “Show me the tribute money.” This was a case in which the Pharisees were trying to catch Jesus in a trap over the paying of taxes. They buttered Him up as being a great teacher (which he was/is) in an attempt to get him to say they should not pay tribute to Caesar, for had He made that statement, He would have been in trouble with the government.
Jesus wisely identified them as hypocrites and asked them to show him the money that was to be used for the taxes. When they brought Jesus the coin, He asked them whose picture was on the coin. Upon their admission, Jesus told them to give unto Caesar what was Caesar’s and give unto God what was God’s (Matthew 22:21).
When Jesus showed them the money and spoke the plain truth about the money, that challenge appeared to wipe the questions from their minds and erase even further questions and tricks they wanted to pull. As proof, we see in verse 22 that they marveled and left Him and went their way.
Hmmm, could we say "Money Talks?" In God we Trust!

Happy Valentine’s Day
By Bro. Bill Scroggs February 14, 2010
How many Valentine’s Days do you remember? How many Valentines -- besides today’s -- do you remember or even remember who ever gave you a Valentine? Being the hopeless romantic that I am, I remember not only my first Valentine but also the ones that Reta has given me. I can even remember the cards I picked out with care for her, and even the punch line. (Just kidding.)
Those who know me best (Reta and the girls) know that I shop for the "this will do" most of the time. In fact, what has me thinking about this on Thursday, instead of Friday or Sunday (today), for that matter is a statement made by my granddaughter Courtney, while we were in the car together on the way to school.
She said, “One of my pet peeves is people who fill out their Valentines at school or who even tear off the bottom of a sheet of notebook paper and make you one while you are standing there watching.”
Now, I don't remember that we were talking about Valentines or cards or anything any particular, but that random thought just crept out of her brain.
What had happened was that she had been led by the Holy Spirit to bring conviction on me, for most of the time; I'm not as conscientious as most folks are when seeking an appropriate gift or card to show my love to family and friends.
Her comment served to remind me how much God loves you and me, how He gave His own son to pay for our salvation (John 3:16), and how He knew we needed that perfect gift, long before we were born.
Happy Valentine’s Day! God gave His Heart to you. Hold it close and remember the Giver.

Oh, Say But I’m Glad
By Bro. Bill Scroggs February 7, 2010
I was over 40 years old when I first heard the old gospel hymn, Oh, Say But I’m Glad. I am not quite sure how much older since time flies when you are having fun, but I am sure I was older than that.
This song was a favorite of an older lady, the mother of a friend of mine. She was getting on in years, spent her days in a wheelchair, and had degenerative arthritis in her joints so severely that her hands were pretty much useless. With a voice cracking from years of laughing and calling out to kids and grandkids, the lady saved her voice only for what was necessary.
One thing you could count on, however, was that she would use it to praise The Lord. When you came into her room you were brightened by her presence. Even in her struggles with pain and lack of mobility, she would praise God and want to sing, or have Reta and others sing to her.
Many thought she was foolish using what little voice and breath she had to sing, but she was able to lift our spirits as we heard and saw her lifting up the name of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with hymns and just praise in general.
Every time we were able to pray and praise God with her, it was a special blessing. When we left, we were able to sing and praise God, remembering how she in her afflictions reminded us to be glad. In case you have never heard it the chorus is written below. I pray you have a reason to be glad today.
Oh, say but I'm glad I'm glad Oh, say but I'm glad I'm glad Jesus has come and my cup's over run, Oh, say but I'm glad I'm glad!
Remember the words of the writer in Psalm 122:1, “ I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.” I am glad you are here. You make my life more full.

Is Your Prayer…
By Bro. Bill Scroggs January 31, 2010
How many times have you prayed and your prayer was not answered in a positive way? Or… Was it answered in a positive way and we did not recognize it as such?
This week, Courtney was upset with Reta because Reta told her she was praying that it would not snow here. Courtney said that since Reta was older, God would answer Reta’s prayer instead of hers. After Reta and Courtney left for school, I began to think about the many possibilities God has to sort through to answer each of our prayers every day. Just like with Courtney’s prayer for snow, there are millions of possibilities that could be factored into a prayer like that.
Courtney and millions (at least hundreds) of young people would be happy to be out of school and get to see the beauty of a pretty snow. Hundreds would enjoy the winter wonderland of a pretty snow. Yet there would be many upset to have to go to school in June. And there is the possibility of accidents because some people do have to get out in it. There also is the situation where maybe a dad or mom is coming home from Iraq or Afghanistan and can’t make it because of icy weather.
This might be the reason the writer of James 4:3 says, “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” Let us learn to pray carefully when asking for “things” and pray as Jesus, for the will of the father to be done (Luke 11:2).

Well
By Bro. Bill Scroggs January 24, 2010
At some point last week, as we were enjoying some warmer weather after single digit weather the week before, we had seen almost everything weather could offer since the first of the year. We had seen rain, we had seen snow, we had seen sleet, we had seen warm, we had seen cold and very cold and we had seen fog. Someone had to go ahead and mention that we had not seen hail.
Well… before this week was over, Rhonda was able to come through and announced that it had hailed in Morrilton and Conway. I do not think anyone dared mention tornadoes either, but we also had a tornado in Arkansas this week.
We really are blessed that our weather is so varied, I hear people almost every week in other parts of the country that would love something besides dry, or wet, or cold or snow day in and day out.
There is even one man in Hawaii that tells us he wishes it would get cold enough to snow, but we really know he is just rubbing it in that we are not as blessed as he is.
I am grateful for the rainy day: It makes me appreciate the dry. I am grateful for the warm days because they make me appreciate a cool snap. Well… you might say that we must learn as the apostle Paul to be content in all things as he said in Philippians 4:10-12 “But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity. Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: everywhere and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.”

Today
By Bro. Bill Scroggs January 17, 2010
What can you say about today? Some will say it is too cold. Some will say it is just about right. If it rains, some will complain. If it doesn’t, some will complain about that also.
Many will complain about current economic conditions, others about the state of the young people today. I will be one of those young people of today because, as most of you know, there are no ‘young’ hippies.
The ‘beatniks’ have just about all gone, most of the hell’s angels are in their 70’ and 80’s. Most of the old hippies have cut their hair, shaved, and in general cleaned up their act. It is humorous to think about the "Wild Bunch" of yesteryear who wanted nothing to do with the establishment, being a card-carrying part of society. They have their Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security cards readily accessible.
Many who complain about today’s kids probably were even worse than some of today’s generation. I am glad to say that, for the most part, I see a generation that is really seeking; not willing to accept the rebellion and disrespect of their parents, school systems, and our country.
Concerning today, I say it is a great day to praise God and trust that He is in control. Things aren’t great, and never have been if you ask each generation. However, we can rejoice; knowing that our God reigneth. Paul, in his letter to the Philippians in chapter 4 verse 4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice.” Today in that verse is understood.

011010
By Bro. Bill Scroggs January 10, 2010
As I looked at the date above, it came to me that it was written resembling a binary number. Since it has been many years since I had to mess with binary numbers, I sent out a request to a few folks that might know and care what the decimal equivalent was.
Very quickly I got answers back from Doug and Rhonda. That prompted me to ask the sequence since it was so easy for them to know I needed a refresher. Doug proceeded to give me not only the information I wanted, but also gave me the information beyond what I was seeking. He refreshed and taxed my limited brain space with the logic behind the hexadecimal numbering system.
I talked to Donna Smith, a close friend from Oklahoma, since I know she looks for the meanings behind numbers and has she quickly notice there are three 1’s and three 0’s, with three being the number of the Trinity. The binary number converted to our base ten or decimal system is 26. The two three’s (1’s and 0’s) equals 6 and etc…
Everything multiplied and added and divided and subtracted proceeded to cause my brain to overheat and start smoking. About that time Doug called to see why I had the sudden interest in arithmetic and wondered how I had been able to forget the training we had on electronic switches years ago.
When I explained to him the mild interest I had in the number it became quite clear to us both: 011010, today’s date, means cold! We both doubt if it will be above 26 degrees. We know one thing: It is time to follow the advice in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-21, “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” That, and stay warm (my advice).

Happy New Year
By Bro. Bill Scroggs January 3, 2010
By now, you probably have had at least one opportunity to write out 2010. As I started writing this, I felt a sense of ‘can this really be’.
Somewhere I saw it written as 2K10 and it started to sink in that it has been 10 years since the big fear of the Y2K ruckus. The biggest challenge of the Y2K era was that it was almost glitch- free despite all the hype preceding the date change.
To think we are ten years into this thousand years makes us adults realize how quickly a year or a decade rushes by. It is true, that time does not wait for any of us, and while we are sitting here pondering the speed at which time flies, we will find Easter right around the corner.
I personally did not achieve all I intended to in the past decade, even though I did reach some milestones I did not think possible. I did not even achieve all I hoped to accomplish in 2009.
I finished the year at least putting into place some processes to allow me to be entering the new decade with greater focus. My prayer for the future is that I am able to enter the new decade with a renewed energy and vision for what God wants for our church, my family, and my life.
Let us take time this week to listen and become obedient to the tasks God has called us to, and follow the apostle Paul’s advice in Hebrews 12:1, “Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.”
Happy New Year!

Finishing Off 2009
By Bro. Bill Scroggs December 27, 2009
What a deal! I hope you were able to see at least a little snow on Christmas day. Courtney was excited and made sure I got to see it (at 12:09 am) and, as I write this, it is still snowing.
Snow on CHRISTmas always increases the level of excitement; at least for some of us. It makes me feel like a kid again, thinking about the times we played in the snow, made snowmen and snow forts and of course, enjoyed snow ice cream.
CHRISTmas brings excitement every year as we take a minute to remember the real reason for the season, and that is that God provided Himself a sacrifice as Abraham told Isaac in Genesis 22:8.
God gave His only Son to bring salvation to us and as we reflect on this gift I trust you get excited every time you think about it.
I am also thankful for what you mean to God’s kingdom. Thank You for being you, and for the gift you gave to Reta and me for CHRISTmas. You are special to us year round not just at this time.
It has been a busy several weeks and, as we finished Kayla’s wedding last weekend, many of you had other obligations and some were just worn out from one thing or the other.
Since we only had a few who were going to make it back Sunday night, we decided to dismiss the evening service so I could go with Reta and Courtney to see my other two grandchildren in their CHRISTmas program. This was truly a blessing that I have missed for the past several years.
I pray as we finish 2009 we are rested and prepared for what is coming in 2010. God Bless you and your family.

Joy to The World!
By Bro. Bill Scroggs December 20, 2009
From as far back as I remember, “Joy to The World” has been one of my most favorite Christmas carols. I almost said my favorite, but then I thought of a couple of others that rank right up there close to the top.
I don’t have any that I do not like, but any that have praise or joy are moved to my favorites very quickly. More than anything, this world needs joy, praise, and peace on earth.
The world seems to have a lot of trouble finding something to praise in these economic times. And… if you are looking for the answers in man’s solutions, you will always be disappointed.
However, if you put your eyes back on The reason for the season you will find true peace, true joy, and the reason to praise God not just at Christmas, but throughout the entire year.
Do you need some good news? Of course you do; we all want and need good news. The good news has come to us, so let us rejoice with the angels as they said in Luke 2:10, “Fear not for, behold, I bring you great joy, which shall be to all people.”
God bless you and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Can’t Stop Now!
By Bro. Bill Scroggs December 13, 2009
All last month I focused on giving thanks. As we always bring up at Thanksgiving, we should remember to give thanks all year long. As I say this, I know most of you remember to say thanks throughout the rest of the year, but you know how hard headed I am: I sometimes need to be reminded.
Last Sunday we were blessed beyond words as Bro Roger Gaunt shared his personal mission story. I have seldom been in the presence of a missionary speaker touching hearts as he did during the service. We should have known God was up to something big because of several ‘equipment’ challenges (opportunities) getting ready for the presentation.
In truth the equipment presentation though impactful, was nowhere near the effect that came as Bro Roger shared his heart and passion for missions from a personal perspective. Several who were there mentioned others who would have been blessed by hearing the message.
And then… we were blessed to find that we had well exceeded our Lottie Moon goal for Foreign Missions by at least 300% on the very day we kicked off the season of foreign missions. Praise The Lord for each of you who have given at least part of what God told you to give.
Now we can’t stop! Continue to bring your offerings that missionaries might be on the field next year because of your faithfulness. Cutbacks had to be made last year because Lottie Moon Goals overall were not met.
Let us give thanks and give as God has blessed us to surprise even us with what God wants to do. Remember what Jesus told us in Luke 6:38, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
Again, can’t stop now, either in giving thanks, or just giving.

Let Us Give Thanks
By Bro. Bill Scroggs November 29, 2009
The theme this November has been on giving thanks. I want to thank you for the sheets you turned back in so we could share our thanks together. I say thanks to many of you who even went beyond the number I placed on the sheet and added extras.
I thank you for each one who helped put the potluck together on such short notice, especially Jeanie and Phyllis who called many of you to let you know and coordinate the dishes.
I thank each of you who go the extra mile to keep onions out of foods you love just so I will be able to eat it. I think you need to go ahead and keep the onions in for those of you who like onions. This will serve two purposes. First I might eat less if there are onions in it. Second I might learn to eat onions, as I hear they are good for me.
A special thanks to each of you that have made sugar free deserts so I and others that don’t need sugar will have something to eat. The thoughtfulness is appreciated more than you know, even if I do sneak over to the real thing from time to time.
I thank you for helping me watch what I eat better this year and encouraging me in my progress. Thank you for caring about me sometimes more than I cared for myself. Thank you for checking on me this past week even in the midst of your own celebrations.
The apostle Paul wrote this to the church at Philippi in Philippians 1:3, “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.” I, too, thank God at every remembrance of you. Thank you for being you!

Let Us Give Thanks
By Bro. Bill Scroggs November 22, 2009
This is the weekend before Thanksgiving, and I got a great response from your Thanks requests from last week. I had many that were similar as was expected, family, friends, country, church and freedoms as well as some interesting and some unusual. I will be sharing some of these with you during the service.
We are blessed to live in the greatest country the world has known this side of the Garden of Eden and my prayer is for our children and children’s children to enjoy the same level of freedom and opportunity this country has known for over 130 years.
Our blessings were as a direct result of God’s care and protection for His people. I thank God for that legacy and pray that our generation does not drop the ball.
Take time this week to really give God thanks and share with someone outside of your norm (family and close friends) how much God has blessed you this year. In other words let as take the advice of the writer of 1st Chronicles 16:8 who says, “Give thanks unto the Lord, call upon His name, and make known His deeds among the people.”
God Bless each of you and have a safe and relaxed holiday.

Let Us Give Thanks
By Bro. Bill Scroggs November 8, 2009
Those of you who know me know I will give thanks and praise God at the drop of a hat, and will even throw down the hat. But as I was thinking about it, we do have many things to give thanks for.
One of the first things that comes to mind is that Derek is home! Daily, I thank God as I see in the paper or on the news about another bombing in Afghanistan that Derek has made it home safely and is starting the next phase of his life.
I thank God for our young men like Derek Neeley and Blake (Fil and Linda Chapman’s grandson) who are willing to step forward and serve our country even in times of war.
I thank God for the rains we have had this year and are out of the drought situations in most of our state. I thank God for the beauty we see because of the rains.
I thank God for the protection we have had from the ice storms this year. While parts of the state dealt with days and weeks of no electricity, we for the most part were warm and dry.
I thank God for protection from the floods and tornados other parts of the state had to deal with. Yes, we have much to be thankful for.
Let us join the Psalmist in Psalm 75:1 who declares, “Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare.”

What A Day That Will Be
By Bro. Bill Scroggs November 1, 2009
Walking with Jesus here on earth gives us the opportunity to see beauty all around us and give thanks for the blessings He has sent our way. The writer of James 1:17 reminds us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
This week the rains have come and the winds have blown and through it all God has protected us. The leaves in all their splendor have held on to show us their beauty (at least some have held on.) Now they will show off until they wave to us as they flutter to the ground in one last display of brilliance.
This can be a lesson to me and each of us who pays attention. Hang on and be the best you can be until that time of your departing to go to be with God and even in our last hour may we give God glory and honor for placing us here.
When we leave here, this beauty will pale in comparison to what we see in glory. Truly what a day that will be.

A Call on Your Life
By Bro. Bill Scroggs October 25, 2009
When someone speaks of a call on your life, many folks think about pastors, missionaries or even deacons and Sunday school teachers. And these positions should be filled by those with such a call on their life.
We may forget that whatever you do you should do as unto the Lord (Ecclesiastes 9:10.) This is the reason it is noticeable when we find a teacher or hardware man, or chicken farmer, or telephone person or any of dozens of other professions.
Whatever the vocation God has led you to, there should be a call on your life for that opportunity. Every place God has led me whether military, Bell Telephone, civic club or other situations, I can look back and see God’s hand leading. Even in some of the places I was not so happy about, He was leading.
Take a moment and think back on where He has led you. I believe you will be able to see even in the difficult times His direction or call on your life led you to a place where possibly only you could have made the difference that He allowed you to make. If we did not think God was leading, even during the so called unimportant times of our life, is to forget that God thinks of you continually (Psalm 40:5.)
Spend some time today thinking about the call God has on your life, and thank Him for His love and care for you. On your next challenging day, remember what the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 8:28, “All things work together for god to them that love the Lord and are called according to His purpose.” What is your purpose or call?

What Would You Do?
By Bro. Bill Scroggs October 18, 2009
How many times per week do you ask someone for advice? How many times per week does someone give you advice you ask for? How many times per week does someone give you unsolicited advice? How often do you thank them for the advice; either requested or volunteered?
As our world has grown smaller due to communication and travel, the unsolicited advice is more often than not unwelcome. However this week I was given some advice that, at the time, seemed fairly intrusive. As I thought about and took the advice to heart, it became beneficial.
As I reflected the events of the day I knew I could have easily ignored the advice, considering the cost and source and I would have missed a blessing God had sent my way. I pondered the fact that in my lifetime, I probably have thrown many nuggets on the heap and possibly cast away a fortune that God had put before me either in wealth, health or friendships.
So, could it be that advice could be a good thing, bringing to pass Romans 8:28 where the apostle Paul reminds us, “All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.”
What would you (I) do with the resources God has set before you? May I be more careful in the sorting process.

“Into Each Life a Little Rain Must Fall”
By Bro. Bill Scroggs October 11, 2009
This title is a quote from Longfellow, but is a reality most of us have experienced even just this week. Each day, we have many challenges and trials that might cause us to want to give up.
It seems that the challenges or opportunities many times outnumber the victories and good times we enjoy. The trials often times cause us to forget just how blessed we are. I am trying to spend time daily learning how to properly give thanks to God for all victories, as well as giving thanks for the challenges and the growth they bring.
Have you noticed how quickly we can get off the track of praising God? Did you notice we seldom forget to gripe or complain if things don’t go our way? Have you had a day without aches, pains, frustrations or some form of trial? Have you noticed how one question seems to evoke another and another? One thing just seems to lead to another.
But think about how blessed we have been by the rains. Think about the personal growth we experience because of the challenges and trials. Because of its struggles, the beautiful butterfly gains the strength it will need to face the winds and rains to make the journey from Canada and North America to Mexico and even Cuba.
The writer of James 5:11 gives us this encouraging word, “Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

For The Beauty
By Bro. Bill Scroggs October 4, 2009
There is a ‘little’ nip in the air and that gives us a hint that fall may be on its way. The grasses are dying off not so much from frost as from just being dry during this late summer.
The rains of late should give us some beautiful leaves and indeed some of the trees are already changing into their brilliant colors.
The older I get, the more I appreciate the differences. As trees and grass turn brown, there are still flowers blooming and giving a sharp contrast to the ones going into hibernation. I probably used to just ignore them, but now, since I have seen some others, seem to just jump out at me.
Take time to look around. Time is fleeting and changing, so take a quick look to see the beauty God puts before you today. Then remember to give Him glory and praise. The writer of Psalm 29:2 gives us this word, “Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.”

Are You Ready For …
By Bro. Bill Scroggs September 27, 2009
At this time of the year, this could be a question that could go many directions. One commercial asks, “Are you ready for some football?” Someone could ask “Are you ready for cooler weather?” Someone might ask if you are ready to rake leaves. Someone might even ask if you are ready for Christmas.
All these questions demonstrate where we place the importance of whatever activity. As I thought about these questions, I thought, “Yes, I am ready for some and some I will only be ready when it hits.”
Getting ready is a matter of perspective, and I hear some folks answer to almost any of the questions, “I am as ready as I will ever be...” That is probably how most of us find ourselves; getting ready as if by crisis and not by intention.
What about this: Are you ready to praise The Lord? We have a million reasons to praise Him, but how many choose to praise Him? If you are reading this, you woke up this morning with the sight to be able to read and a myriad of other blessing He has given you.
In all of your getting ready, don’t forget to get ready to praise The Lord. The blessing is you do not have to wait for a time or place; you can praise Him at all times. Psalm 106:1 reminds us to, “Praise ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good, for His mercy endureth forever.”
Are you ready to Praise the Lord?

Welcome Home
By Bro. Bill Scroggs September 20, 2009
A mother is able to sleep better this week as her ‘boy’, Derek, has finally made it home safely. All of his family and friends are able to breathe a sigh of relief and say ‘Amen’ to the prayers for Derek and his unit that have been answered.
It was good to be able to hear his voice as I gave Derek a “Welcome home, civilian!” call. I know that Derek faces a few days of challenge as he gets started on his schooling and looks forward to the next stage of his life.
Derek, we thank you for your service to our country, and we will of course be in prayer for the men and women you served with. Our prayer is for you to have a smooth transition back into the ‘real’ world.

Dixie Jackson Mission’s Offerings
By Bro. Bill Scroggs September 13, 2009
All three churches where I have served as pastor have been recipients of funds from the Dixie Jackson State missions offering. The first church, Valley View Baptist Church at Bay Village had received money to help with the building of a parsonage in the 60’s or early 70’s.
As a layman, I worked in our association (Trinity Baptist) on the Missions Committee. It was there I came to understand how important this offering was to the small churches in Arkansas.
When I was called there in 1988, we were proud to give back to the Dixie Jackson offering to help mission churches around Arkansas, and we were even able to watch as other pastors in our association received pastoral aid through the Dixie Jackson offering.
When I was called to the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Batesville Southside in 1992, again the church had been the recipient of grants and/or loans to build the church, and I think even to expand. I was again proud as our folks reached goal after goal helping brothers and sisters in Arkansas.
When I came to First Baptist Church Petit Jean in 2001, I already knew from some of my missions education that we had at the very least been the recipients of the use of one of the mobile chapels purchased in the 80’s by Dixie Jackson Mission money. I later learned we had also received some grant monies.
It is a blessing to know FBCPJ has been mission minded from the very beginning; giving back what we were given many times over. While we may have given back more dollars than we were given, we will never be able to fully pay the debt of love of friends around our state, who gave not only money, but prayers and encouragement to see that God’s work was brought to the mountain. Thank God for those friends and let us be that friend to others.

There Is Sunshine in my Soul Today
By Bro. Bill Scroggs September 6, 2009
When I sat down to write this, a beam of sunlight streamed through my window to brighten my day. Naturally, I thought of the song in our hymnal, "Sunshine in my Soul," by Eliza E Hewitt.
Since this song is a song of praise, it is, as usual, "one of my favorite songs." We are bombarded on so many sides with trials and afflictions that it is good to be reminded of a reason to sing praises unto God daily.
I thought, What if the sun was not shining? Would I still be excited and praising Him? My initial, and hopefully, my final answer, would be “yes.” I do choose to praise and honor God not only when the sun is shining in my yard and in my life, but also when clouds and trials are on the horizon.
The clouds bring rain, which can be a good thing, and the trials work on my patience, which also is a good thing. The message in the song reads, “When Jesus shows His smiling, face there is sunshine in my soul.”
Every day may not bring sunshine, but when we let open our minds, we will see The Sonshine in our hearts, there to warm us, commission us, and encourage us to be a blessing to someone else. Paul's letter to the Galatians reminds us: “Bear ye one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ” (6:2).
Let someone see the Sonshine in you this week.

The Loner
By Bro. Bill Scroggs August 30, 2009
In the past couple of weeks if you drove past the flower bed, you will notice there have been some changes. The flower bed had just about got out of hand; even after Jeanie had weeded a time or two. While Doug and Jeanie were deciding the next move, Reta started weeding the south side and I worked on the north side.
To make a short story long, the grass thrived and the flowers never did recover from the help they were given. When the smoke cleared, the lone survivor was the pepper plant (see below). Not only has she (or he) stood tall for everyone passing by to see, but has graced the cover of last week’s bulletin and now, the back cover.
This loner should be an inspiration to us all. First she (or he) is a volunteer. Nobody told him (or her) to rise up and bloom, it just did as it was created and intended for.
Secondly, the pepper continued to stand tall in the middle of adversity. The heavy rains had not washed it out; in fact the rains had given strength to it’s roots. Trials cause our faith to be strengthened. Put down your roots, for the next storm might be even tougher.
Third and last for now, he (or she) stood tall, even though the rest of the flowers did not survive. Sometimes it is easier to stand up when everyone else does. If no one else hangs on it is easier to give up also.
What about you? Are you willing to volunteer? Can you stick with it through adversity? Can you keep on even if no one else does or is even watching? Colossians 3:22 tells us to do as the pepper plant with these words, “Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not unto men.”

The First Day of School
By Bro. Bill Scroggs August 23, 2009
The 2009 school year has officially begun. I know the pre-k, kindergarten, and maybe the first graders are excited. Some are excited over the new toys and friends while others are excited in another way. They are apprehensive over leaving mom and vice-versa.
As I thought about the new students starting to Reta’s class and also Phil and Linda’s little granddaughter Emily Faith starting to school, I wondered how they would remember their first day.
Actually, I don’t remember my first day of school. How many of you remember your first day of school? How many of us remember the last day of school? The fact is I did not start learning on the first day of school, nor did I stop learning on the last day.
My training began long before I went to the first grade. My mother and dad taught me before my formal education began. I also learned from my older sister and through my life, I even learned and still learn things from my younger brother Doug.
Teaching a child is one of the most awesome tasks God trusts us with carrying out. The writer of Proverbs 22:6 gives us this challenge, “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
Since we never stop learning, we do well when we follow the words of the writer on Psalms 90:12, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Keep your last days as exciting as your first.
